Cellulite Treatments Review
Cellulite is a skin surface that that is nearly omnipresent in women.
Until now there is no cure to this condition. However it can only be
temporarily improved. Cellulite strikes women regardless of their
weight. There are lots of treatment options for cellulite.
Liposuction, the standard treatment of cellulite, is costly and can
involve an extensive recuperation period. A small cannula (similar to a
straw) is inserted through a small incision. The fat cells are broken up
and drawn into a vacuum device attached to the cannula. Liposuction
recovery can range from two days to two weeks depending on the severity
of the surgery. Additionally, a compression bandage or garment is worn
for 14 to 30 days. The rate for liposuction ranged from $2000 to $8000.
Non-invasive vacuum treatments have found popularity among women who are
looking for an affordable treatment for cellulite without the long
recovery period. LPG or the Endermologie, approved by the FDA, was the
first in-office vacuum treatment. LPG’s mechanism is a handheld device
that kneads the skin. The affected areas are pulled and massaged by two
rollers. The sessions require participation from the patient as he/she
contracts and relaxes muscles of the affected area. The purpose is to
encourage increased circulation thereby changing the skin. Subsequently,
the metabolism of the fat cell is re-established. The advantage of
Endermologie treatments is that they are safe, painless, and short in
length. A typical treatment session takes 30 to 45 minutes. The standard
course of treatments is 6 appointments and cost typically of $100 to
$150 per session. The main drawback of Endermologie is that the results
are not long lasting. Cellulite returns when treatment is discontinued.
VelaSmooth, another vacuum cellulite treatment, combines infrared light
(700 – 2000 nm), bipolar radiofrequency, and vacuum suction. The feeling
of deep soothing heat permeates the areas being treated. VelaSmooth acts
to repair the connective tissue septa and fat, the contributors of
cellulite. VelaSmooth has shown impressive results. Study participants
have reported an improvement of approximately 40% to 50%. The advantages
of VelaSmooth treatment are that are FD approved, safe and painless.
Again, affordability and length of treatment is not bothersome. The
standard course of treatment is 6 to 8 sessions with each session
lasting 45 to 60 minutes. An advantage of VelaSmooth is that there are
very few side effects with this treatment. It is approved by FDA, safe
and painless. Another advantage is that a typical course of treatment is
6 to 8 sessions with each session lasting 45 to 60 minutes. The main
drawback of VelaSmooth is that the results are only temporary. Cellulite
can return in 6 to 8 weeks without ongoing treatments.
ThermaCool and Alma Accent RF system also utilize radiofrequency to
treat cellulite. While both treatments are FDA approved for rhytides and
wrinkles, they have shown results in the area of cellulite. The
ThermaCool works by delivering a heating effect to the deep derma by way
of radiofrequency. During the treatment a cryogen spray cools the skin’s
surface in between each radiofrequency. The Alma Accent RF system has a
unique dual mode radiofrequency that is delivered via one device. Each
radiofrequency is delivered at different tissue depths which allows for
treatment of large areas. The advantages of ThermaCool and Alma Accent
RF are that the treatments are painless and safe. The disadvantages of
these treatments are that they are not FDA approved for cellulite
treatments and cellulite was reduced temporarily. Once treatment was
discontinued, the cellulite returned. There had also been bruising and
blistering reported by some patients.
